The National Science and Technology Council proposed a development plan for next-generation communications technology on Wednesday.
According to the council, the government plans to invest NT$27 billion (US$824 million) from this year through 2030 to boost the development of Taiwan's communications sector. It also aims to increase the output value of telecom equipment from NT$244.1 billion last year to NT$320 billion by 2030.
National Science and Technology Council Minister Wu Cheng-wen (吳誠文) said the integration of satellite broadband and 6G communication technologies will play a key role in areas such as smart cities, Internet of Things applications, and the mobile communications industry. He emphasized that Taiwan must continue developing communication technologies to maintain its advantages.
The council said the plan includes three main strategies: promoting the deployment of application services; establishing experimental facilities to accelerate technology development; and strengthening collaboration between industry and academia.
The plan is set to help support Taiwanese companies in developing products such as communication chips, key components, and communication systems, the council said. It added the government will revise relevant regulations and strengthen talent cultivation.
The council said that 5G communications are primarily land-based, while 6G will integrate land, sea, and air communications, enabling wireless connectivity and internet access for underwater operations. It noted that 6G signal transmission can automatically intensify or reduce output based on user needs, which helps lower energy consumption.
The council hopes that 6G communications can help bridge the urban-rural development gap, promote digital inclusion, and integrate with the healthcare sector to enable remote smart healthcare services.
Wu said the government plans to launch six domestically developed satellites, with the first Taiwan-made communications satellite scheduled for launch in 2027. He noted the remaining four satellites could be launched as early as 2029.
Wu added the council will collaborate with Project Kuiper, Amazon's satellite internet initiative, to provide high-performance satellites, ground stations, and terminal equipment to the US market.
